STCW Safety Courses

The STCW safety courses include courses covering Chapter 6: STCW Code for Standards Regarding Emergency, Occupational Safety, Security, Medical Care and Survival Functions and covering the following:

  • STCW VI/1: Safety familiarization, basic training, and instruction for all seafarers.
  • STCW VI/3: Training in advanced firefighting.

STCW Basic Safety Training (BST or BT): The training combines four elements of basic safety into one program:

  • First Aid/ CPR
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibility
  • Basic Fire Fighting

BST or BT is the legal minimum requirement for anyone looking for commercial work aboard vessels over 24 meters, including Superyachts and Cruise ships. This certificate is also colloquially known as STCW Card by new aspirants in the United States.

BT is packaged as a blended program: students will spend 57 hours of blended learning, including 19 hours across 3 days of in-class training.

Advanced Firefighting is a mix of theory and practical scenarios with a major focus on “command and control”.  This is usually offered as a combined basic and advanced firefighting course and is aimed at officers appointed to control fire-fighting operation as a team leader.

First Aid/ CPR (Blended)

First Aid/CPR is a required course for a seafarer to be employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship as part of the ship’s complement with designated duties in the operation of the ship.

Personal Survival Techniques (Blended)

This course combines an online program offering theoretical lessons and in-water training to teach candidates the necessary actions and survival techniques to ensure safety during an emergency evacuation/ abandonment from a vessel or offshore facility.

Personal Safety & Social Responsibility (Online)

This online course, one of the four courses that make-up the Basic Training suite, is designed to teach personnel the proper actions to take while executing their shipboard duties to ensure their own personal safety, the safety of fellow crewmembers and to protect the marine environment.

Basic Fire Fighting (Blended)

This course, offered as a blended program, is designed to teach: a) The importance of fire prevention, b) The actions to take upon discovering a fire, and c) Self-protection with existing firefighting equipment.

Basic Training (Blended)

Combined Basic and Advanced Fire Fighting (Blended)

This course, offered in a blended or hybrid format, is designed to train seafarers in minimizing risk, maintaining state of readiness, and extinguishing shipboard fires.
