Did You Know?

This is required by the STCW 2010 code for all mariners with safety or pollution control duties. Basic Training (Basic Safety Training) combines all four elements of basic safety into one program.

STCW Basic Safety Training (BST or BT): The training combines four elements of basic safety into one program:

  • First Aid/ CPR
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibility
  • Basic Fire Fighting

BST or BT is the legal minimum requirement for anyone looking for commercial work aboard vessels over 24 meters, including Superyachts and Cruise ships. This certificate is also colloquially known as STCW Card by new aspirants in the United States.

BT is packaged as a blended program: students will spend 57 hours of blended learning, including 19 hours across 3 days of in-class training.

Successful completion of this course will satisfy:

  • The Basic Training per STCW Code, as amended 2010 Section A-VVl
  • The Personal Survival Techniques per 46 CFR l l.302(a)(l) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(l)
  • The Basic Fire Fighting per 46 CFR 1 l.201(h)(2) [BASIC Only] and 46 CFR 1 l.201(h)(3)
  • The Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting per 46 CFR 1 l.302(a)(2) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(2)
  • The Fire Fighting requirements per 46 CFR 13.201(c)(3), 13.301(c)(3), 13.401(d) and 13.501(c)(3) for any tankerman endorsement
  • The First Aid & CPR requirements per 46 CFR l l.201(i)(l) when applied for within one year of the date of training
  • The Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities per 46 CFR 11.302(a)(4) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(4)
