The BWM regulations require foreign and domestic flag vessels to abide by the BW discharge standards in the US waters. Coast Guard will check BWM activities and procedures on board for reporting and recordkeeping and check for its timeliness, accuracy, and completeness. The ship’s BWM plan includes crew training to be validated during the vessel and port state inspections.
Ballast Water Management is governed under US laws and the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) adopted in February of 2004 that entered into force in September of 2017. The BWM course designed to provide understanding and to meet the requirements of the ballast water management regulations and operational compliances.
Successful completion of the course will help candidates understand the impact of uncontrolled ballast water admissions into restricted waters and the systems and technologies that are available to mitigate such releases. The candidates will also learn onboard operational aspects of recordkeeping and maintenance of the BWMS.
